MSA 2023 Post Tour

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC TO VIENNA, AUSTRIA

JUNE 4 – 8, 2023

DAY 1, JUNE 4
DEPART BRNO FOR AUSTERLITZ BATTLEFIELD

While I am not a large fan of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Austerlitz Battlefield (only 15 miles from Brno) was the site of one of the most important engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. It was also decisive in that it brought to an end the 1000-year-old Holy Roman Empire founded in the year 800. Following our visit to Austerlitz we will proceed to Český Krumlov where we will overnight.

THE CAIRN OF PEACE

Built in 1912, it was Europe’s first Peace Memorial. It was built to honor all victims of the memorable Battle of Austerlitz (December 2, 1805).

WE WILL OVERNIGHT AT THE HISTORIC FOUR-STAR HOTEL EBERSBACH IN CESKY KRUMLOV

CESKY KRUMLOV

The first part of the city’s name, Český, means “Czech,” and the second part, Krumlov, was derived from a German description of the tight bends in the river. It is one of the most picturesque towns in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated on the banks of the Vltava River(Moldau in German), the town was built around a 13th-century castle that features Gothic, Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements and was founded shortly before 1250. Český Krumlov is an outstanding example of a small central European medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact.

DAY 2, JUNE 5
CESKY KRUMLOV to MELK, AUSTRIA

After spending the morning in Český Krumlov,  we will leave for Melk, Austria.   Situated at the point where the river Danube enters the Wachau Valley, the picturesque little town of Melk is best known for its massive Benedictine Abbey, one of the most splendid monastic houses in Austria.

Schallaburg Castle, 3 miles from Melk, ranks amongst the most beautiful renaissance castles north of the Alps. The castle’s oldest roots date back to the Middle Ages, examples of which are found in the Romanesque living area and the Gothic Chapel.

Inspired by Italian designs, the central part of the Schallaburg Castle was built in the German renaissance age, beginning around 1540, by the Lowenstein dynasty.

The Vienna State Opera House is a 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival venue that was the first major building on the Ring Road built from 1861 to 1869.

Towards the end of World War II, the opera house was badly damaged by an American bombardment. The auditorium and stage were destroyed with the props for more than 120 operas and 150,000 costumes.

The decision was made to rebuild the opera house as it had been. It was not until 1955, that the Opera House could be reopened. The new auditorium had a capacity of about 2,276, including 567 standing room places.
